How long do pet insurance claims take?

There is no single UK deadline for pet insurance payouts. Some straightforward claims settle in days; complex or incomplete ones drag on for weeks.

A realistic timeline

  1. Submit — online form or app with invoices and clinical notes.
  2. Acknowledgement — often within a few working days.
  3. Assessment — claims handlers may query the vet for history, especially for illness or high bills.
  4. Decision / payment — once information is complete, many claims pay within a couple of weeks, but busy periods and third-party reviews take longer.

What usually slows things down

How to keep a claim moving

Send complete documents first time. Note the claim reference. If the insurer asks the vet for notes, call the practice to confirm they received and answered the request. Keep a simple log of dates and who you spoke to.

If it has gone quiet

Chase politely with the reference number. If you hit a deadlock, use the insurer’s complaints process, then the Financial Ombudsman Service if needed — see claim rejected.
