Waiting periods on UK pet insurance
Most UK pet policies do not pay for everything from day one. Waiting periods (sometimes called deferred periods) are the days or weeks after cover starts before certain claims are allowed.
Why insurers use them
Waiting periods reduce claims for problems that were already brewing when the policy began. They are normal, but they catch people out — especially if a pet gets ill shortly after switching or buying cover.
What is usually delayed
- Illness — often a short wait (commonly around 14 days, but check your schedule).
- Accidents — sometimes covered sooner than illness, sometimes from day one.
- Specific conditions — cruciate ligament, dental, or behavioural cover can have longer waits.
What to do before you need a vet
- Open your policy schedule and find the waiting-period table.
- Note the start date of cover and when each category becomes claimable.
- Keep vaccination and vet records handy — insurers may ask for history around the start date.
If something happens during a wait
Contact the insurer anyway and ask how they treat the incident. Some will note it and decide later; others will decline as outside cover. Get the answer in writing. If you are mid-switch from another policy, check whether your old cover still overlaps.
