Vet fee limits on UK pet insurance
Vet fee limits are the maximum your policy will pay for treatment. Hit the cap and further costs for that period or condition may fall to you — even if the pet still needs care.
Common limit types
- Per year — resets each policy year (watch the renewal date).
- Per condition — a fixed pot for each illness/injury; once used, that condition may be exhausted.
- Per condition per year — annual pot for each condition.
- Lifetime / maximum benefit — rarer wording; read carefully.
What counts towards the limit
Usually consultations, diagnostics, surgery, hospitalisation, and prescribed meds linked to the claim. Some policies exclude or cap dental, behavioural, or complementary treatment. Excesses and co-insurance are separate — you still pay those even before the limit is reached.
If you are approaching the limit
- Ask the insurer for a running total against the claim.
- Ask the vet for a treatment plan with cost stages.
- Check whether a referral or different protocol is medically appropriate and covered.
- Do not assume renewal will “top up” a per-condition lifetime cap — many will not.
