Claiming on a multi-pet policy

Multi-pet policies can be good value, but claims are still assessed pet by pet. Shared discounts do not always mean shared limits.

How claims usually work

You open a claim for the specific pet and condition. The insurer applies that pet's waiting periods, excess, and vet-fee rules. A second pet with a different issue is normally a separate claim, even on the same policy number.

Watch for shared pots

  • Some wordings share an overall annual vet-fee pot across pets -- one expensive claim can squeeze the others.
  • Others keep per-pet limits. Your schedule should say which.
  • Discounts for multiple pets rarely change how excesses work.

Practical tips

  1. Label invoices with the pet's name and microchip if shown.
  2. Submit separate claim forms when two pets are treated in one visit.
  3. If both pets share a contagious illness, ask the insurer how they want linked claims documented.
