Switching UK pet insurance without sinking a claim
A cheaper premium is not a win if the new policy excludes the condition you later need to claim for -- or if a waiting period leaves you uncovered mid-switch.
Why switching is a claims issue
Most UK pet policies assess claims against this policy's start date, waiting periods, and exclusions -- not against how loyal you were to a previous brand. When you move, anything already showing in the clinical notes can become a pre-existing exclusion on the new cover, even if the old insurer was still paying for it.
That is why switching is not only a price comparison. It is a claims-continuity decision. See also excess and pre-existing conditions and policy small print.
Map the overlap before you cancel
- Note the exact end date and time of your current cover (cancellation and renewal rules differ).
- Note the start date of the new policy and every waiting period for illness, accident, and any named conditions.
- Aim for continuous cover with no gap -- a day uncovered can leave a new illness entirely on you.
- Do not cancel the old policy until the new one is in force and you understand what it excludes.

Pre-existing conditions after a switch
Get a full clinical history from every practice before you apply. Answer application questions from the notes, not from memory. A limping episode last year can block an orthopaedic claim on a new policy even if you thought it was "resolved".
- Conditions the old insurer covered may be excluded on the new one from day one.
- "Related" or bilateral wording can widen that exclusion.
- If your pet has an ongoing condition, ask the new insurer in writing whether that condition will be covered before you switch.
Open claims and mid-treatment switches
An open claim usually sits with the insurer that was on risk when the claim was notified or when treatment started -- check both wordings. Switching mid-course of treatment can leave you arguing about which policy pays which invoice. If surgery or referral is already planned, finish that episode under the current policy where you can, then switch at a clean break.
For timing once a claim is open: how long claims take. For paperwork: claim evidence checklist.
What to compare beyond price
- Vet fee structure (annual vs per-condition) and remaining headroom -- vet fee limits.
- Fixed excess and any co-insurance percentage.
- Dental, behavioural, and hereditary exclusions.
- How the new insurer defines accident vs illness.
- Direct settlement to the vet vs reimbursement only.
If a post-switch claim is declined
Read the clause cited, gather dated clinical notes, and follow the path in claim rejected. A decline for pre-existing or waiting-period reasons after a recent switch is common -- that does not mean you skip the insurer's complaints process if the timeline is genuinely disputed.
